Moscrop Girls on Tour day 1

What3words: Power.cross.blazers This is part two of our trip. We spent almost a week in Ontario, but there is no need to talk about that here - #ifyouknowyouknow We are onto our adventure propper now and we will try to blog each night as so many people asked us to send pics.... but with the caveat that whether we blog or not depends on the strength of the cocktails......

Our adventure starts with a bizzare, but quintessential Canadian experience. At the end of an internal flight from Toronto to Calgary, the Air Steward said 'there is a bit of a delay in disembarking, please remain in your seats until we are ready' and EVERYONE stayed in their seats and waited patiently! Then, row by row they stood up and collected their belongings and got off the plane - it blew our minds! So civilised! We took the bus from the airport to downtown Calgary - it is a bit of a misnomer really - any guidebook you read barely allocates a full page to the City - and they give the impression there is not much to see - CORRECT! We asked the check-in clerk what is the 'must see' thing in Calgary, and he really had to think long and hard to name something, finally settling on the Calgary Tower.

We set off, taking a detour via another 'famous' place, the Devonian Gardens on the 4th floor of a shopping centre. To be fair, it was pretty, with lots of huge koi carp in ponds - it was not lost on us that there was a pond with baby koi, then a pond with bigger ones, and finally a pond with huge fish...... and right next to that was a sushi restaurant!

Calgary Tower was pretty cool and gave great views over the city. The glass floor felt counter intuitive: even though you know it will take your weight, there is a moment of hesitation just as you step onto it.

But what struck us most was how empty the city was. We expect for the weeks of the Stampede the city will be rammed, but in the middle of June it was empty. Not even much traffic on the roads.

On the upside, we found some great bars and Emily was ecstatic to be carded in the first one: Original Joe's (What3words Power.Cross.Blazers). The music was 70's rock and we sang along as we sat and people watched.

In the second bar Emily had 'the best marg I have ever tasted', a Jalapeno Margarita, and I had a beautiful chamomile cocktail (called a Kyoto Fizz) with vodka, sake, yuzu, white peach, chamomile, lime, soda and thyme. We finished the night off with some chicken wings in the hotel bar - delish. Roadtrip properly starts tomorrow, watch out for more pictures of pretty mountains, less of cocktails, but one final note about how lovely and considerate the Canadians are....they don't just leave gratings in the street for unsuspecting people to catch their heel in, they actually include little footsteps to stand on.
